PICKERING BROOK (CARILLA) SCHOOL

Research by Gordon Freegard

THIS COVERS 100 PLUS YEARS OF THE PICKERING BROOK SCHOOL'S HISTORY. MANY THINGS HAVE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS, BUILDINGS, GARDENS, TEACHERS HAVE COME AND GONE, STAMPING THEIR INDIVIDUALITY ON THE SCHOOL, BUT ONE THING THAT MAKES THIS SCHOOL SO SPECIAL, THE FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE, HAS NEVER CHANGED. SO AS THIS SCHOOL MAKES ITS WAY INTO THE NEXT MILLENIUM AND MANY MORE CHANGES WILL TAKE PLACE WE HOPE THAT ONE CONSTANT NEVER CHANGES. HOPE YOU ENJOY READING THIS HISTORY AS MUCH AS THE P & C ENJOYED COMPILING IT. MANY THANKS TO MARIA GIUMELLI, MICHELLE BURROWS, FILOMENA MARCHETTI FOR THEIR RESEARCH AND TO THE PICKERING BROOK PRIMARY SCHOOL P & C.  THE ORGANISING, PLANNING AND RESEARCH BY JULIE HOLLAND (nee CUNNOLD) AND HER 100th ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE ARE ALSO BE COMMENDED.

THIS HISTORY WAS COMPILED BY THE USE OF SCHOOL JOURNALS AND P & C MINUTES, AS FEW JOURNALS HAVE BEEN MISPLACED OR LOST, SOME YEARS HAVE GOT LIMITED OR NO INFORMATION, SO PLEASE FORGIVE ANY MISTAKES. THE JOURNALS ARE HOUSED IN THE ARCHIVES SECTION OF THE BATTYE LIBRARY.

THE BEGINNING

The original application for a school in the Pickering Brook area was made in January 1915, by a group of dedicated residents as the nearest school to the area was Canning Mills and that was three and half miles away. A new application in April was sent to the Education Department on their behalf by Mr. R. Gamble, District Inspector.
The original site marked on the map was not considered suitable, (the original site was situated near Pickering Brook Railway Station) as they felt it would not be central to most families.
A new site was picked by Messers Weston and French from Government land that was situated near Mr. French's land and 5 acres was set aside. Mr. French also offered to accommodate the new teacher at his place, but Mr. Robert Gamble suggested that the Department should supply both the school and quarters. The buildings would come from West Yarloop and these would arrive by rail to the site chosen as the rail passed by there.
Finally the Minister gave his approval for the tent school and quarters from Stranger's Pool, which is near Williams, be transported to Pickering Brook at a cost of 72 pounds. On the 24th November 1915 school and quarters were completed and the keys were handed to Mr. French as he lived close to the school premises.
On the 1st December 1915 Miss Ellen Seymour, who was appointed Headmistress, opened the school.

Mrs. Robinson, who was Gladys French when she attended school that first year, recalled that Miss Seymour, an elderly spinster, lived in Bickley and used to walk across the bush every Monday morning and walked back after school on Friday.

January 25th School opened with Miss Seymour as Headmistress and an enrolment of 14. Journal shows that attendances were affected greatly by illness such as whooping cough and the weather, as when the rain fell heavily it was not unusual for the school to have only 5 attend. This was due to the fact that most of them had long distances to walk. Occasionally it was noted that children were late for school as they caught the loco, which didn't keep a tight schedule. Miss Seymour also notes in her journal that children were seen to catch the loco to school but never made an appearance there as they went onto Pickering Brook Station for the day.
Empire Day, May 24th, was celebrated by the children learning Empire recitations and Miss Seymour reading interesting storie suitable to that day. They would then salute the flag and they would play games, such as "acting of war" till noon when they would head home.
During winter Miss Seymour writes in her journal "Rain comes in at the front door and it pours in a stream down the middle of the children's shelter. Urinal pan fills being unroofed and floods the boys outhouse. No shelter anywhere, no wonder children catch colds.
In December Miss Seymour is unwell and is forced to close the school.

The beginning of this school year sees bushfires in the area which causes the temperatures to rise and make conditions in the school unbearable and the children are sent home early. First trees are planted in the school grounds for Arbor Day. Towards the end of the year Miss Seymour arrives late for school due to rheumatism in her foot which made her unable to walk to school and she had to catch the loco.
In December when school closed Miss Seymour gave her pupils their first Christmas Party at school.
(Miss Seymour, lived in Bickley and walked across the bush every Monday Morning and walked back after school on Friday).

Again the beginning of the year saw bushfires in the area and conditions were again unbearable. The drill that was part of the school program and would normally be performed in the afternoon was now done in the mornings, due to the heat.
During mid-year Miss Seymour having a type of Scarlet Fever and thinking that it was unwise to have children in the class with her, let them do gardening till noon and then sent them home.
America Day was celebrated in July by lessons on that topic in the morning and the afternoon was spent as the children pleased, as the Daily News of June 19th stated that there was to be a half day holiday. Badges were given out when children left for home.

School re-opens with 9 children and bushfires are still present in the early part of the year. Again from writings in her journal attendances at school are low due to diphtheria being present in the community.
July 21st was gazetted as a holiday for PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

Her first entry reads:
"Re-opened school. 8 children were present. Some children owing to the excessive heat have not yet returned from their holiday resorts, others are ill."
Bushfires again make conditions unbearable and teacher wishes she had ventilators.
Miss Eckersley returns from her Easter break to find the school and quarters in disorder. Men had used the school to sleep in while doing repairs to the outside. Due to the excessive noise produced by the workmen she changed the timetable to do more silent work.

10 children are present on the first day.
Again illness and the weather affects the number of children attending the school and on one day only 2 children are present.(Probably the ones that lived the closest to the school, or her two children). During this time Mrs. Millar closed the school for a few days as one of her children was very ill.
In September Mr. Blythe, Drill Instructor, visited the school from 11.45am to 12.45am. His time was limited with the children because of the time taken to walk from the station to the school.

In December water in the school tank was found to be polluted by a huge lizard so it was emptied. Mrs. Millar finds that the tank leaks and reports it to the Department.
School Board grants the children a holiday on December 18th so they can attend a school picnic.
The Inspector, in his annual report, noted that "only two children sang well" and the one small blackboard was quite inadequate.

Pickering Brook has an enrolment of 18. Mr. Harris has to contend with bushfires in the early part of the year. He helps to fight a bushfire which threatens the school but no school property is damaged. In his journal he makes mention for the first time that the school runs on winter hours starting from the 2nd of April. The hours are 9am - 12noon and 1pm - 3.15pm.
On May 24th Mr. Hadley, School Inspector, visited the school, and attended the celebrations for Empire Day.
For Arbor Day this year the children planted 12 pine trees. During a winter storm in July the School was struck by lightning and was slightly damaged. In August contractors constructed verandahs and put a wash-house at the quarters. Again in December a board holiday was granted for the children and their parents to attend the school picnic to Como. 70 People attended.

Has an enrolment of 22 children. The highlight of the first term is when all the children and parents are taken by "motors" to see the Centenary Fireworks display on the Esplanade. The cars left Pickering Brook at 5.15pm and returned 12.30am. According to Mr. Harris the display was poor.
June 3rd King's Birthday and school is closed. School is closed early September as teacher is ill.
The West Australian Centenary was celebrated September 13th. This was done by a combined Schools Demonstration, Sports Meeting and Children's Fancy Dress Ball. Over 300 children attended. There was an equal number of parents. Over 39 pounds was donated by the various schools to be given out as prizes and used to purchase souvenirs, refreshments and sweets. This is the first time that the journal mentions an Interschool Carnival. Pickering Brook's colours are maroon and orange.
The results of the Sports Carnival are:

Recollections of Cath Grosvenor (nee Lugg)

Visit to Pickering Brook School by Mr. Harry Thomas, Inspector.

In July 1932, Mr. Thomas visited the school to make his annual inspection. At that time, my mother and my sister (Lucy) were living with me in the school house while my father (Richard Bunt Lugg) was leading an expedition to look for Lasseter's Reef. The thought of an inspection was slightly terrifying but, surprisingly, Mr. Thomas made friends of all the pupils, including my sister who was doing post-primary study. We finished the morning session with a procession to the Hall so that Mr. Thomas could hear the choir singing to piano accompaniment. Not only did he listen, he performed as well.
By then it was lunch-time so he was invited to the house (which looked rather like an old tram) to meet Mother. She was "Spring-cleaning" and had several well-worn mats draped over the verandah rail, and a bucket with a mop on the floor of the dining room. Mr. Thomas was invited to stay for lunch and, while preparing it, my Mother sent my sister Lucy to as him if he took milk and sugar in his tea. Lucy was as flustered as I was and began thus:
"Excuse me. do you take tea Mr. Sugar?" his instant response was,
"Yes please, Miss Milk."
We thought he was a charming visitor. My Mother made a copy of the school report to show my Father when he returned from the "Never-never" many months later.

Copy of Inspector's Report.

This school has an enrolment of 11 - mostly juniors - all of whom were present. The efficiency of the pupils has materially improved and in addition, one is conscious of an atmosphere of culture and artistry in all efforts of teacher and taught. The curriculum subjects are most capably taught in a most attractive manner.
Post-primary work is making excellent progress. Among the many pleasing features are: the attractive artistry of the teaching, especially that of the junior division; the development of musical appreciation; The excellent progress of a post-primary pupil; the excellent attitude of the children.
Miss Lugg is worthy of congratulation on her successful work. The educational outlook of these young pupils is full of promise.

School opens the year with Catherine Lugg still Headmistress and an enrolment of 13 children. On the 20th February school was closed from noon owing to the death of Mr. T. A. L. Davy the Minister for Education. On the 15th May Mr. Geoffrey Mann is appointed as the school's new Headmaster.
In July the school closes for three days as teacher's son has diphtheria. Nurse arrives and takes swabs from children but all are negative and the school re-opens on the 10th July. The Kalamunda R. B. Secretary and his assistant arrive to spray the house, lavatory and school verandah with formalin? They didn't spray the interior of the school but Mr. Mann later disinfects the floor with extra formalin. No further outbreaks were recorded.
Late July the triangular paddock just beyond the hall was ploughed by Frank Hawkins using Mr. Williams' horse and plough for the combined purpose of a school sports ground and a basketball pitch. Basketball hoop retrieved from the bush at Pickering Brook Football ground. A hoop to match was made by Mr. G. Holroyd.
In October Mrs. Mann (Headmaster's wife) volunteered to teach the girls sewing as there weren't enough girls to warrant appointing a sewing mistress.

Mr. Robertson & Mrs. McCourt were transferred in May and the two new teachers were Mrs. M Lyons and Mrs. Lawton. School had an enrolment of 93 pupils.
On March 31st children were taken by private transport to Mundaring for the Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth II. The children were given flags and took up allocated spaces near the main road. The Headmaster writes "Her Majesty the Queen and Royal Party went past too quickly for the children to get more than a fleeting glimpse, nevertheless, flags were waved vigorously and lusty cheers were given". On April 1st the Queen gave a Broadcast where she apologized at not seeing the children as arranged but appealed to them to do all they could as their ancestors had done to make and keep Australia a great nation.
To raise money the P. & C. organized film nights at the Hall and the Headmaster arranged a pruning demonstration by the Agriculture Department. This was held in Mr. A. Altinier's orchard.
Factions sports were held in October and Blue won again.

An arrangement was made with Mrs. Lodge that she would drive the 8 children to school in a Government Van supplied for the service and it would be kept at Barton's Mill. Children that didn't live at Barton's had to catch the "High School" bus until further arrangements could be made. Draw back was that children would arrive at 8.00am and not leave till 4.00pm when bus passed again.
Mr. Bull leaves Pickering Brook after three years and Miss Donovan is transferred to Port Hedland.

School re-opens with 93 children. Because of the numbers an application was made for another teacher. Mrs. Knight was re-instated as the Migrant Teacher.
For the first time the Pre Primary has been moved on site occupying one room of the Prefab. During the holidays extensive renovations were undertaken. Miss Maria Sewell was appointed as the new teacher, and Grade 7 were moved into the second room of the Prefab Building. In March Mrs. Oxberry comes to teach every Wednesday afternoon to allow Headmaster to attend meetings.
In March PWD front end loader has been extending the oval eastwards and by the end of the month loader finishes leveling off. Oval looks very impressive. 28th March school closed Special Holiday to mark the visit of HRH Queen Elizabeth II & Prince Phillip to W.A.
In April, Kalamunda Signs painted 1976 Citizenship Award names on board and 1977 Principal and P. & C. Office Bearers. The idea is to assist in the development of school tradition. Children had to commence playing in the area east of Carilla Hall because oval was out of commission. Mrs. Biondo still teaches Italian on a voluntary basis.
During May holidays other Prefab room was renovated and new furniture arrived for the grade 7's. In July bitumen was laid on the area between the office and the prefab building. 12,000 gallon tank was erected and used for reticulation.
Arbor Day, 15th September, 34 trees were donated by the Shire of Kalamunda and were planted in groups north and west sides of the oval Mr. Frank Vinci is employed as the school gardener.
Faction sports held at Club Oval and Weston won. (No mention of champions in Journal). In October school entered a team for the Quiz night held at Kalamunda High between local Primary Schools. The representatives were Chris Donnelly, Ronan Holland and Darryl  ?  They performed creditably.

Interschool sports was held at Club Oval.

In the Headmasters Journal this year he states;"No Citizenship Awards were presented by Mr. Spriggs as there was no suitable candidates. The lack of this award caused some concern among parents. It was pointed out that no one had displayed the necessary responsibility and attitude to warrant the award being presented. There appears to be a general lack of satisfactory attitude and responsibility throughout the school. Little concern is shown for peers and little initiative demonstrated."

Staff changes Michael Thayne to North Fremantle, Leonie Ackley to North Forrestfield and Gary Homer to Port Hedland.

PICKERING'S GARDENER HANGS UP HIS SPADE

After nine years of dedicated work, the much loved Mr. Frank Vinci will retire from the Pickering Brook Primary School as the School Gardener.

Mr. Vinci has been living in the Kalamunda area for over 25 years and has become well known and widely liked and respected identity within the community. But he is now 65 years of age and must retire.
A lot has been achieved since 1977 when Frank Vinci first started planting the school oval. The well maintained gardens and thoughtfully planned grounds will stand as a reminder of Mr. Vinci's hard work for the school which he has come to love.
"I'll always remember the day I started at Pickering Brook Primary School." Frank wrote in a letter to the Principal, Mr. Jim Ford recently. "At that time, there were no trees or garden and there was no lawn on the oval."
Mr. Ford said that the school grounds were in a very poor state when frank first started. With the help of Tony Vincenti, Frank planted the oval. He also planted most of the trees, flowers and shrubs that are established around the school today.
"He put drains around the school grounds, put in steps, walls, footpaths and laid an extensive system of trickle irrigation." said the Principal.
Mr. Ford said that he would be very sorry to see the gardener go. As for the future, Frank and his wife would like to do a tour of Australia and he has been wished a fond farewell by the staff and students of the Pickering Brook Primary School.

COMPUTER FIRST

Year 1 students at Pickering Brook Primary School, Antonella Ballato and Erin Beard, both 5, are learning how to use a computer.

And they are only just starting to read.
Joyce Johnson teaches computers to Years 1 and 2 and later this year will teach it to her pre-primary students.
She said the students were relating so well to the computer they even used it during recess and lunchtime.

"We have timetables, otherwise they fight over them." she said.
Mrs. Johnson said one of the first words the Year 1's learnt was "spacebar".
"Each time the children have a go the word "spacebar" comes up, which gives the instruction to press it." said Mrs. Johnson.
"It's a change from the old schemes that are taught the words "nip" and "fluff."
There are 53 children at the school and three computers, one for each class.

School opens with enrolment of 58 children. Numbers are up this year due to new families in the area.

Guitar and Italian Teachers have changed.

A new photocopier was purchased for the school.

As part of the fundraising the P. & C. organized a Bush Dance to raise money for landscaping around the school but this was cancelled due to lack of interest.

Mrs. Sheppard leaves the school at end of 2nd term and Mrs. Jocelyn Sugars is appointed new teacher for years 3, 4 & 5. There is doubt whether the Italian Teacher will be there till the end of the year.

The school is looking towards more sophisticated computers. Quiz night is once again a wonderful success. There is mention of turning the old Shelter Shed into an Art's Room.

School re-opens with an enrolment of 82. Enrolments have increased due to Carmel School closing. The school has also gained equipment from Carmel School as well as money to purchase various items for the school.

New transportable arrives in March and class is set up.

In February Ministry still had not made a decision on bus for Carmel children but by April a bus was operating.

In September the school was looking at Automation of the Library and this would be set up in two stages.

IBM Computer is purchased to place in the Library for library purposes as well as general use for the children.

Faction Sports was held and Hadley won after many years.

School re-opens with 84 enrolment with pre-primary included.

Neil Reynolds, one of the parents, volunteers to start up a school basketball team. The response is overwhelming and a few teams were formed. (They are still playing today and doing very well. (1996)

Ian Cullen organizes a Musical between Karragullen and Pickering Brook which is performed later in the year at Lesmurdie High School.

This year there was a concern regarding school numbers for if they were to drop below 77 we would lose a teacher. So it was decided to advertise in the local press and 4 year old Playgroups for cross boundary applications for the following year.

Orange Grove hosted the Interschool Sports. Faction Sports are held and Hadley wins.

In August an Aboriginal speaker, Jeremy Garlett, came to speak to the children on his culture and Alma Tocmath, a mural painter, also came and taught the children to paint a Mural. These were very successful and one of the murals was raffled.

POSITIVE VIEW ON SCHOOL

The Pickering Brook Primary School faces a doubtful future, if Government plans to close it go ahead.

But the school's Principal Philip Mort has an optimistic outlook. He said it was unlikely the school would close, considering the nearest school is in Walliston. "There could be a chance, but the probability is not high." he said.
"When the news came out that the school was on a list of centres to be closed, there was an  uneasy feeling throughout the community and we're still not sure of the future.
"The students enjoy a mix of rural lifestyle, but they are still close to the city."
The School was one of many throughout W.A. that should be closed, according to a government report.
East Metropolitan Region MLA Nick Griffiths said the local community deserved a fair warning if the school's future was in doubt.
"We want to know if the school is among many being considered for closure, amalgamation of sell off by the Government." he said.
The school opened in 1916 and up to 100 children are expected to attend it next year.
Mr. Griffiths said the Government should promise full consultation before any decision to close or amalgamate the school, guarantee a 12 month lead time in the event of closure so that parents and teachers had time to make other arrangements and guarantee that any funds raised through closure or sell off were ploughed back into local education. A spokesperson for Education Minister Norman Moore said there was no official list of schools to be closed and assessments would be carried out on many schools next month.

School opens with an enrolment of 93 children.

This years P. & C. major project is to build and improve the amphitheatre to be used for assemblies and concerts. The school also acquires a new computer with CD ROM.

As part of W.A. Week the school held a Multicultural Day and each class studied a country e.g. it's culture, cooking etc. On the day each class cooked a dish from their particular country and everyone else had a sample. The day was very successful and was enjoyed by teachers, students and parents.

In second term school played a round robin of Football & Netball against Karragullen and Wattle Grove. Both of our teams did very well.

Joanne Jeggo resigns from her job as Registrar and Glenis Turner and Sandra Forrester are relieving Registrars until Sandie Leaver is appointed towards the end of the year.

The conversion of the Shelter Shed to an Art Room is the P. & C.'s major project for the year.

This was the year of the Teachers' Industrial Dispute and many school activities were put on hold or cancelled. By the end of second term, numbers at the school had reached 106. Mrs. Sugars goes on long service leave and Jeannine Horsham is appointed Relieving Teacher.

Drawing for the Art Shed are done, plans are accepted and work begins. P. & C. purchases a BBQ for school use. A new set of Encyclopedias are also purchased to replace the old set which are dated 1977.

The Registrar takes leave towards end of year and Lorraine Busby becomes Relieving Registrar.

Mrs. Dee Donaldson comes to the school in third term and teaches the years 2 & 3. (This class was previously taken by Mrs. Monkhouse and then Mrs. Faux). Mrs. Johnston is still our Music Specialist but takes long service and Mrs. Bunton is appointed as relieving Music Specialist Teacher. Mrs. Vicki Zornada is also re-appointed as Special Ed. and left towards the end of 3rd term and re-instated at Blackmore Primary. Mrs. Sandie Leaver is still on leave and Mrs. Sandra Forrester is appointed as Relieving Registrar.

In March a Busy Bee is held by the P. & C. to paint the new Art Room and the Shelter Shed is finally transformed into an Art Room and is used with enjoyment by the children and Mrs. Purcell who is the school's Art & Craft Teacher. Staff toilets are finally built at the school. (During our research we discovered the first request for staff toilets were made in 1871.)

The biggest event for the school this year is the celebration of our 80th Birthday Celebration, which will be held on November 2nd and we hope will be a great event enjoyed by all.
(Please note many names have been omitted from the Sports awards for the last ten years, as our records have been misplaced, so if anyone can fill in the blanks please tell us.)

GENERATIONS OF PICKERING BROOK

In 1916, the Pickering Brook Primary School began as a modest, one-room establishment with 15 children, one teacher and a small blackboard.
Eighty years later the school accommodates six classrooms, an oval and 100 children from pre-primary to Year 7., under the tuition of five teachers and two teaching aides.

As part of its 80th Birthday Celebrations this year, the school will be holding a day of festivities on Saturday November 2nd.

Activities begin at 10a.m. and include a BBQ lunch, horse and cart rides, an exhibition of students' work and a photographic display of the school's history.

The Pickering Brook Heritage Group, which is helping organise the festivities, will also be exhibiting a miscellany of artifacts relating to the school and the area.

PICKERING BROOK HISTORIAN A WINNER

Meticulous research of local history has led a Pickering Brook Primary School student into the National Final of the Australian National History Challenge.

The competition prompted Year 7 student Claire Collier to produce an audio tape which captured the history of her 80-year-old primary school. Claire, one of thirteen entrants from the school, interviewed former students from each of this school's eight decades, to earn a high commendation in the competition's heritage category.
