GIANT TREES

Our forest contained many massive trees that were hundreds of years old. Unfortunately most have been cut down by the sawmills and processed into timber, or destroyed by bushfires. However a few have survived and are to be treasured as relics of the past forests. Shown here are a selection of a few of the known ones that have been photographed, measured and recorded by a few passionate people such as Russell Du Guesclin, Graham Dunn and D. Mifsud. Shown in this selection are huge old trees aged an estimated 250 years old to 400 years old. That amazingly exceeding more than 5 human lifetimes. Unbelievable.

Lone giant surrounded by re-growth forest. A solid tree with superficial fire damage. All major limbs are dead with only a few small trunk shoots alive. Tree may not survive much longer. Main trunk splits at 27m. Was once nearly 50m tall. At 10m the trunk tapers unexpectedly, likely the result of a major limb weighing several tonnes breaking off. The area is completely covered by bark indicating that the tree healed long ago. Volume: main trunk 74.7m3, limbs 16.5m3. Total volume 91.2m3 - MAY have been 100m3 if all limbs were intact.
