LIGHTNING STRIKE

Research by Gordon Freegard January 2023

During a severe thunderstorm in September 2014, a lightning strike hit a huge Jarrah tree blowing it to smithereens. I was fortunate enough to be taken to the site by Mac Beard where I was able
to photograph the site a couple of days after it happened. It was an amazing site. You could not apprehend the power needed to do this sort of damage. The tree was (and I stress WAS because it ain’t anymore) in the bush area west of Canning Road between Glenisla Road and the start of Pickering Brook Road. The whole tree was lifted about a foot out of the ground as seen by the marks on the image. Pieces of the tree, heavier than what one person could lift, were blown
metres away resting up against other trees. The whole tree above about two metres was blasted
in all directions with some pieces ending up on Canning Road some 200 metres away.
